A big hello from Tasmania! One

4 May 2004

Hello, today I am writing from deloraine on behalf of myself and Zayda!

I arrived in Tassie on the Spirit of Tasmania ferry on Sunday morning after an exciting voyage across the Bass Strait in gail-force winds and made my way to the lovely town of La Trobe.

While there I went to the morning local market and bought a book which I read on the banks of the beautiful Mersey River under the shade of oak trees in autumn colour. It rained most of the day and was very cold - but I saw a wild Tasmanian Devil!

From La Trobe I traveled to Deloraine and spent a night in the car (outside it was less than five degrees Celsius -- when I went to a supermarket they told me it was 12 degrees Celsiusinside and I thought it was warm!)

On Monday I headed to Launceston to pick up Zayda at the quaint little airport (stopping on the way at a wonderful copper sculpture art gallery).

Zayda arrived with a lovely smile and we headed into the Launceston CBD for a delicious lunch which we followed with a visit to the Cataract Gorge, a breathtaking gorge with towering cliffs in the heart of Launceston.

After a few false starts as to which road to take, we drove to Liffy Falls (a world heritage area of forest), a lovely scenic drive along winding roads in the mountains. Zayda had wanted us to arrive at his close friend Ross Ulman's house in Mole Creek at 5:00pm. At 5:04pm we arrived at the Omemilebridge sign on Ross's gate.

Ross and Vivienne, long-time friends of Zayda and Boba, have modeled their house and property on Prospect Hill Park (the large farm-style property that Zayda and Boba used to own in Wandin, Melbourne) and their lifestyle on Boba and Zayda's.

We had a lovely dinner of homemade pizza and sat talking for some hours before retiring to bed for a much needed sleep.

This morning we had delicious porridge before setting off again towards the east coast. Everything is going smoothly and the countryside is beautiful - like New Zealand, but we can feel the history of the places as we pass through them.

All my love and best wishes,

Felix (and Zayda)
