A Saturday afternoon at an Australian country pub: Some
of the Cameron boys took Eva -- visiting Australia from
Switzerland for three months -- to the St Andrews Pub, after
visiting the locally-famous St Andrews Market. (From left:
John, Virgil, Felix, Eva).
St Andrews Market is a weekly cultural event held in the
north-eastern outskirts of Melbourne. Nestled amongst the
beautiful dry bushland of outer Melbourne, the area of St
Andrews is just beyond the fringe of Melbourne's 'civilised'
urban sprawl.
The Market also belongs to this twilight zone -- existing
in a world just beyond the 'civilised' normality of urban
Melbourne.
Known by locals as a friendly Saturday hangout for alternative
types of all descriptions, St Andrews Market attracts hippies,
yuppies, bikies, young and old couples and families alike.
Even a few tourists make their way to the Market throughout
the year.
Clearly, participants in this amazing cultural tradition
are all eager not only to sample the cheap organic fruit
and vegies on offer, or to receive a cheap massage or fortune-telling;
and not only to browse the clothing stalls for good bargains
or even catch up with good friends over an organic coffee;
but also just to relax, bask in the sun, and soak in the
wonderful atmosphere of a place where it doesn't matter
who you are, what you think, or what you might look like.
